February 19th, 2010 International Paper (IP) corporate officials met with AWPPW Executive Officers President Rhodes, Vice President Pallesen and Secretary/Treasurer Hassey. IP officials requested both AWPPW Local 677 and AWPPW International open the labor agreement 3 years earlier. IP stated the current labor agreement does not match the recently bargained labor agreements between IP and the United Steel Workers (USW). IP requested AWPPW members agree to approximately a 30% reduction in pay and benefits along with a number of labor agreement language concessions including IP's right to contract out maintenance and production work.
AWPPW officials asked if the mill is losing money; IP said profits are not the issue, the issue is IP wants the AWPPW to agree to the same concessions as negotiated with the USW.
AWPPW officials are not agreeing to open the labor agreement.
